The Compact Disc, or CD, is an optical disc used to store digital data, originally developed for storing digital audio. While working at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, James Russell invented the underlying principles of the compact disc,[408] later presenting and selling the rights to companies such as Sony and Philips. As of July 2007, Russell currently holds 54 legal patents relating to his inventions in optical recording and playback.
